In Jareth's Castle, Saturday Afternooon

Well... That hadn't gone quite as planned. The right words have been said, and Jareth has simply laughed in the faces of our would-be rescuers. What now? Three challenges? That wasn't in any of the clues! Play fair, Goblin King!

Then again, saying, "It isn't fair" never really seems to do anybody any good in here anyhow, does it? Drat.

[Follows this post! For Team Jareth and for our pretty pretty Princes and Princesses! If any of you need an NPC for your trials, please, visit us over at this post and we'll send somebody by as soon as we can!]

"I'm wanted here. And welcome." Helen struggled to find the right words to explain. "He says I can stay forever, that he won't change his mind and get rid of me like everyone else, and I believe him. Even the goblins are kind. No one thinks I'm an abomination or too unpleasant and... I'm happy."

"Okay, I'm pretty sure back at school, no one thinks you're an abomination," Peter said. "In fact, if I'm remembering radio correctly, there's at least one guy who thinks you're far from it. You okay with never seeing him again? Because if you want me to, I'll tell him. I'll tell him that you're happy without him, and that he was nothing to you compared to his majesty, royal king of codpieces."

She swallowed hard. James. How could she have not remembered James? "I... no. I wouldn't want you to tell him that. I care for him a great deal. It's just..."

What was it just?

"I want to see him again. I wish he could be here."

Now she was torn. To be in a place where she was happy and wanted, but never see James again or go back where she almost always felt out of place and knew she'd probably never be allowed to go home again.

"I don't know," she said finally, feeling a bit hopeless. "I don't know what to do."

"I'll say one thing," Peter said. "The king is a liar. He says you'll always be welcome here, but if that's true why did he need to kidnap a whole bunch of you? He's a liar, and he can't be trusted."

Helen's heart sank and her head went down. "You're probably right," she said dully. "It's too much to expect that I'd be welcome anywhere for long."

At least in Fandom she had James for a while longer - until she had to leave or he grew tired of her. Here, if the king tired of her, who knew what would happen.

"I guess..." she rubbed at her face, then carefully put on that air of indifference and superiority that she'd developed to protect herself in just such circumstances like these. "Might as well go back. It's not as if I'm going to achieve anything useful here."

"Good," Peter said, smiling. "I mean, I'd hate to miss you in class each week, any way. You won't regret the decision. Promise."

"Right," she said sarcastically. "I'm sure those three classes are the highlight of your week. All right, let's go."

And after a moment, grudgingly, because it was the thing to do and not because she was at all certain she meant it yet. "Thank you."

The "I suppose" she added on mentally probably wasn't completely apparent.

Oh yes, Helen was firmly back behind her abrasive protective shield.
