Re: The right way! And... down?

Jason was never going to tell anyone that he had screamed in surprise when he started to fall.

He was also never going to tell anyone that his scream reached a higher pitch when he suddenly stopped falling. "What the hell?!" he said. In his defense, he was a little uncomfortable right now.

"The oubliettes sure are busy this week."

It was hard to tell where the voice had come from originally, but a few of the hands in front of Jason flowed together to form a face. It eyed him critically and asked, "Did Jareth get tired of you, too?"

Jason would have leaned back if he could, but up close and personal seemed like the only option. "I'm pretty sure I'm the one who's getting tired of things. What the hell are you?"

The hands were getting much better at simulating eye rolling. "We're Helping Hands," the face retorted. "And if you're one of the captive heirs, I can see why Jareth is sending you to the oubliettes."

Another face formed. "I don't think that's a very helpful attitude," it said reproachfully.

"Uh, who are you meant to help?" Jason asked. Because if they weren't going to help him, he was going to work a lot harder to get away. "Is the oubliette what's below us?"

"Did you notice how you weren't plummeting into the oubliette?" Another face asked. "That's helpful, isn't it?"

"Oh. Well, yeah I guess it is," Jason said, peering down a little and noticing the lack of close ground. "Uh, thanks then, for the...you know, hand." Whoever designed this place had a really odd sense of humor. "Is there anything I should know before I get down there?"

There was some whispering back and forth between the hands. "I don't think we're supposed to give you much help," a new face said, sounding a little embarrassed.

"We didn't with the last group," another voice piped up.

"Should we put them all together?" asked a third.

"No," said the first. "Jareth doesn't want too many in one oubliette. Let's put this lot in a different hole."
