FALLOUTVERSE - Capital Wasteland into Vault 106 - DAY THREE

For a moment, it seemed almost like a rustic scene: a herd of calm, two-headed cows ambled idly past Fandom's camping spot, and took up a position to graze off what little grass managed to wrestle itself loose from the ruined soil, just a few feet away.

But overnight, the cracks had increased in size, cutting through the sky. Looking upwards now, it was almost as if whatever location they were pulled towards had a halo, a small ring of friendly skies from which the blackness shot out in several directions.

Furthermore, though, this was Radscorpion country, and the people who travelled here now would do best to watch their steps...

And after that, it was on to a small hidden door in the middle of nowhere - behind which hid Vault 106.

[[ wait for the ocd up! ]]

"Okay," Tim said, not believing it for a second. "Hang in there and we'll-"

"HAhAhAhAHAHA!" cackled a familiar voice. Tim's face lost all color and he turned to see the Joker, his white skin and green hair spattered with blood. He waggled a bloody crowbar at Jason and grinned at Tim. "Protect him? AhaHAhAHA! Oh, birdy-boy, I'll smush you, too!"

"NO!" Tim yelled. He swung his broom handle at the Joker's head. The Joker cackled again and disappeared.

"Tim!" Jason yelled, trying to get his attention back while attempting to grab his arm from the side so he didn't get a broom handle to the face. "There's nothing there, it's okay." At least, he hoped there was nothing there. Maybe he was the crazy one and Tim could see what he didn't.

Tim lowered the weapon, but he was still pale and shaking. "I think this place is messing with our heads," he said. I'll take "Stating the Obvious" for $1000, Alex.

On one hand, it was reassuring to know that he wasn't the only one seeing things. On the other, that meant getting through here was going to be dangerous for everyone, and he didn't know how much time they had to save themselves. "Do you think the radiation is stronger here?" Jason asked, regretting not buying more of that medicine in the town.

"Don't know if that'd do hallucinations," Tim said. "Probably something in the air - hang on." He unslung his backpack and knelt to dig something out. He stood up a moment later and handed Jason a small rebreather - one with a distinctive bat-shaped symbol stamped on the front. He kept one for himself. "That's got four minutes' worth of clear breathing on it, so maybe save it until we really need it." He didn't meet Jason's eyes.

At first, Jason was just grateful for the possibility of clean air to breathe, and for Tim's Boy Scout way of being prepared. Then, he got a better look at what Tim had handed him. Even for a Boy Scout, a rebreather was a little much to just have in his backpack, and Jason realized he'd seen something just like this before. This one was newer, and a little more advanced, but the symbol was unmistakable.

"Where'd you get this?" he asked. Maybe he was hallucinating again already.

"I know a guy," Tim said carefully. "Spends a lot of time in a cave."

"Except for the time he's out saving Gotham, you mean?" Jason asked, lowering his voice so only Tim could hear him. "You know Batman?" If he was more calm, that probably would have come out sounding less accusatory. It wasn't like he'd said anything to Tim about being in the same boat, after all.

Tim nodded. He debated for a moment, then looked around to make sure no one was watching. Then he yanked down the collar of his t-shirt to expose the red armored tunic underneath... and the R symbol on the left side. He held it long enough for Jason to get a good look, then let go of the collar and adjusted the shirt so the tunic didn't show. He watched Jason's face with a solemn expression.

If Tim wasn't looking at him the way he was, Jason would have sworn up and down that he was seeing things again. He knew he wasn't the only Robin there'd ever been, but Tim didn't fit the bill at all, and Jason wished like hell that they were anywhere else right now but here, because his head was already swimming enough without all the new questions. How had he not figured out who Tim was? Was this an alternate world thing, like with Dinah, or Bruce being their age? Was Tim's Bruce not all about the young orphans?

"You're Robin?" he finally said quietly. He wasn't going to believe it until Tim actually said it.

"Yeah," Tim said. "This probably isn't the place to discuss it, though."

"No, probably not," Jason said, because if there was any conversation that required clear thinking, it was probably this one. They would definitely have to talk when they got back to Fandom - if they got back to Fandom, and that was the thought that had Jason add, "I'm not mad. Just...surprised. But we definitely need to talk." Maybe Tim wouldn't be mad that he hadn't said anything to him either.

Tim nodded. "Let's make it home safely first, okay?" Well, now if they died here, it'd have an upside - Tim'd be able to avoid discussing this with Jason.

"Good idea," Jason said, tucking the rebreather away in his pocket, where no one else would see how it looked. He tried to tell himself that the feeling of dread was just from being nervous about not making it home. "Come on, I think we need to head this way."

Tim nodded and followed Jason, keeping his makeshift staff ready for attack.
