FALLOUTVERSE - Capital Wasteland into Vault 106 - DAY THREE

For a moment, it seemed almost like a rustic scene: a herd of calm, two-headed cows ambled idly past Fandom's camping spot, and took up a position to graze off what little grass managed to wrestle itself loose from the ruined soil, just a few feet away.

But overnight, the cracks had increased in size, cutting through the sky. Looking upwards now, it was almost as if whatever location they were pulled towards had a halo, a small ring of friendly skies from which the blackness shot out in several directions.

Furthermore, though, this was Radscorpion country, and the people who travelled here now would do best to watch their steps...

And after that, it was on to a small hidden door in the middle of nowhere - behind which hid Vault 106.

[[ wait for the ocd up! ]]

Ender hadn't slept much last night, but that, he imagined, was not a problem here: the more eyes open, the more they were capable of making sure nothing invaded and destroyed their camp.

He'd had vaguely distorted dreams of Mirelurks when he did dream, anyway; he'd rather not return to that.

He got up, taking his small collection of Mirelurk cakes and Iguana meat with him, and went to distribute it to anyone who looked hungry.

Quinn wasn't sure when or how she'd fallen asleep, but she had -- head conked back against the rock, tire iron slipping from her grasp, and she was pretty sure the sticky stuff matting her hair was drool.

At least, she hoped it was only drool.

She got to her feet carefully and (leaving the tire iron where it was for the moment) started going through some calisthenics. If today was another day of walking and hitting things with a tire iron -- which was exactly her idea of fun, no lie -- she didn't want her muscles to seize up on her.

"What do you have?" Quinn asked, spotting the food the boy was carrying.

She was trying not to sound too eager. It ... almost worked. (Okay, so last night she'd hallucinated one of the giant crab things was a walking, talking, Red Lobster special, but they kind of asked for it.)

"Mirelurk cakes," Ender said, holding up a few, "And Iguana meat. It's not appetizing, but it's something." He paused. "There's some protein bars making the rounds, too, but I don't have them on me."

Quinn considered her choices. "I'll take the iguana," she said. (She'd seen on TV that lizard meat was low-fat and, oh god, was that really going through her head? Really?)

She shook it off and managed a tiny smile. "Thank you. For sharing."

He smiled back, passing her over some meat on a stick. If you didn't know what it was, it would have almost looked like normal barbecue meat on a skewer.

"What's your name?" Ender asked, rather than waste time on no problem or you're welcome. "And how are you feeling?"

It looked like normal barbecue, and tasted like slightly off, chewy chicken. Breakfast of champions, Quinn thought, swallowing before she turned her attention back to the boy.

"Quinn," she answered. "About how you'd expect. Like I slept on a rock and am going to get attacked by a giant crab any second. But, y'know, coping. You?"

"Ender," he supplied. And repeated, wryly, "Coping, too." He reached back into his backpack, pulling out one of the bottles of Aqua Pura he'd gotten back in Rivet City. He set it down in front of her. "Make sure you stay hydrated. The thirst might get you before the crabs do, otherwise."

Alex hadn't gotten eaten overnight, a fact that he was very grateful for. His shoulder continued to throb and ache but he refused to show it. He just wouldn't use it.

He could feel exhausted to his bones but he couldn't deal with that now. He'd seen Mirelurks last night, dealt with a few of them with the help of the stolen gun and was now seeing them behind his eyes.

Great. More fodder for nightmares. Nonetheless, he was awake.

"Thanks for the reminder," Quinn said, making a face. She picked up the bottle but didn't open it yet. "So do you think we'll have any luck finding the stuff we need to get home?"

She, frankly, did not.

"I think we do, actually."

Actually, Ender had his doubts, himself. But he wasn't going to say that out loud.

"We got lost en-masse, ourselves: a lot of people wound up in the same place, right? So it'd be logical to think that if something else has gone missing from the island, it might well have wound up in the same places, too."

Reno hadn't gotten a hell of a lot of sleep last night, no. But then, Reno was used to not getting a hell of a lot of sleep. He was greeting the day with a bottle of water and a smirk on his face, pacing around the camp and keeping an eye out for anybody who still hadn't managed to get their hands on a real weapon, or who wouldn't mind a nice, big knife to supplement what they had.

And, you know, he was killing anything big and ugly that got too close to the camp, but that was more like a happy little afterthought. Monsters!

Really, when it all boiled right down to it, this wasteland wasn't really different from the deserts surrounding Midgar and Edge at all. Okay, so the nasty things that wanted them dead around here came in a slightly different flavor, and there were more cows than he'd really expected, but all in all?

Reno was still kind of basking in it.

And was maybe laughing like a psychotic hyena every time one of those scorpions came close enough for him to trap in a pyramid or just fry the living shit out of. Good times. Good times.

Makita just looked at Reno slightly askance during one of those hyena-laughs. "You are a very strange man," she informed her former teacher, completely serious. "Very, very strange."

Considering this was coming from a tiny little girl who occasionally skipped stones over the hard grounds of the wasteland, and had cheerfully hummed Nokgorkan tunes under her breath while getting ready to move out for the day, that may or may not be a compliment.
